Since 2005, Gerri Taker has been making brides’ dreams come true in the Miami Valley.

Originally born and raised in Les Îles-de-la-Madeleine, Quebec, Canada, Taker moved to Cincinnati in 2004 and opened her bridal and formal wear store, A Fit of Perfection, in Fairfield in 2005. Then, in 2012, Taker moved A Fit of Perfection from Fairfield to Miamisburg. For the past two-and-a-half years, A Fit of Perfection has been located at 93 W. Franklin St. in Centerville.

Throughout nearly two decades of service to the Miami Valley and beyond, Taker and her team at Fit of Perfection have been the often unsung heroes ensuring that the clothing worn on the most important days of a person’s life is perfect. A Fit of Perfection offers many bridal and formal wear services, which include designing and creating custom gowns, re-designing gowns, cleaning and pressing gowns, in-home fittings, preparation and delivery of bridal gowns on the wedding day and long-term gown preservation.

As a child living in Canada, Taker was taught how to sew after begging her grandmother to make clothing for her dolls.

“My grandma taught me to sew by hand when I was five or six years old,” Taker said. “I was constantly bugging her to make me some Barbie clothes. She taught me to make my own Barbie clothes and, by 10 years old, I was sewing on a peddle sewing machine. At 15 years old, I made my first formal gown. I’ve always loved trying to create formal gowns on my Barbies and I guess that just grew into a career.”

Taker is hearing-impaired, though she has worked hard to ensure that this impairment does not impact her ability to communicate with clients.

After working at David’s Bridal and doing contract work for businesses at her home, Taker worked up the courage to open her very own bridal and gown alterations shop, A Fit of Perfection, in Fairfield in 2005. Throughout her time at A Fit of Perfection, Taker has rescued many bridal and formal gowns from the brink of total disaster.

“One time, I altered a bridal gown that had once belonged to the bride’s mother,” Taker said. “It was a poofy skirt-styled gown with poofy sleeves. We made it into a tight-fitting skirt a few months before the wedding. Then, the bride came in for a fitting closer to her wedding date, and then, to my surprise, she’s expecting. We then had to transform the bridal gown into a maternity gown. Luckily, the bridal gown turned out gorgeous and the bride and her mom were very happy.”

Since opening A Fit of Perfection, Taker’s skills have been mentioned by Cincinnati Magazine and other local publications in Ohio and Indiana. Taker has also altered gowns from customers all over the world, including France, Great Britain, New Zealand, Australia, South Africa, China, Greece and India.

Those hoping to utilize Taker’s skills for their big day will need to get in line. According to Taker, her skills are so in demand right now that her team is booking appointments for 2022 and 2023.
